Meaning

Evaluation of the goalkeeper performance by considering the difficulity of the saves made and standardization of the shots faced.

Calculation

For several shot types and positions Expected Saves are calculated. For each of these the difference between the actual saves and Expected Saves is calculated in percent. This percentage is weighted by the share each of these has on average and the result of that is then multiplied by the average save percentage to have a number that resembles a save percentage.

For individual games, the shot positions are defined more broadly in order to compensate for the significant impact of minor overperformances. However, the adjusted save percentage is most meaningful when applied a sample size that’s as large as possible.

A simplified version, also known as the simple adjusted save percentage, can be calculated by dividing only into seven-metre throws, field throws and direct free throws.

Interpretation

More meaningful goalkeeping statistic than just the number of saves or save percentage. Easy to interpret as the interpretation is the same as for the „normal“ save percentage, where the average is about 28 per cent and the higher the percentage, the better was the goalkeeper.
