How to read the game charts
During the EHF EURO 2024 you can see charts such as the following for every game on Instagram, Threads and X/Twitter. Since there are often questions what each specific metric means, here are the definitions for all of them.
General
1. Goals per 50 possessions: Explanation here.
2. Field shooting (%): Field shooting efficiency (without seven-meter penalty shots and direct free throws)
3. Penalty shooting (%): Seven-meter penalty shooting efficiency.
4. Turnovers per 50 pos.: Lost balls adjusted to 50 possessions. More on why adjustments to 50 possessions are important here.
5. Off. rebounds (%): Percentage of missed shots where the attacking team remains in possession.
6. Suspension minutes: Minutes that a team plays in numerical disadvantage.
Goalkeeper
7. Saves (%): Number of saves divided by all shots on goal while a goalkeeper is in the goal.
8. Net Saves (%): Number of saves where the defending team gains possession divided by all shots on goal while a goalkeeper is in the goal. More here.
9. Empty goals conceded per 50 pos.: Goals conceded where the goal was empty. More on why adjustments to 50 possessions are important here.
Match structure
10. Pace: Possessions per 60 minutes. Explanation here.
11. Possession length (s): Average possession length until the first shot or turnover of the possession. Everything after an offensive rebound is not considered. Explanation here.
12. Possessions <20s (%): Share of possessions where the first shot or turnover of the possession is shorter than 20 seconds. Everything after an offensive rebound is not considered.
13. Running distance (km): Distance run by all players in kilometers.
14. Passes per 35s in pos.: Number of passes that were played per 35 seconds in possession. A low number indicates more isolation heavy play.
15. Shot distance (m): Average shot distance without seven-meter penalty shots, direct freethrows, first-wave fast breaks and empty net attempts.
16. Shot angle (°): Average shot angle to the nearest baseline without seven-meter penalty shots, direct freethrows, first-wave fast breaks and empty net attempts.
