Meaning

Estimation for the overall performance of a player. Developed by the HBL in collaboration with numerous experts from handball and science.

Calculation

HPI points = 100 + ∑(positive actions (for example goals or assists) * respective factor – negative actions(for example missed shots or turnovers) * respective factor)

HPI = ((HPI points – positional maximum HPI) * 50) / (positional maximum HPI – positional minimum HPI) + 50

The full calculation and all factors can be found here.

Interpretation

The closer the value is to 100, the better was the player. Players who play in different positions are only comparable to a limited extent.

Since the factors are only to a limited extent based on numbers and many aspects of the game are not tracked at all, the validity is debatable.
