Finishing (Ability)/
Shot Making
Meaning
Percentage of goals that are more scored than expected from an average player/team
Calculation
Finishing = Goals / Expected Goals – 1
(It is also possible to use Goals – Expected Goals or for teams Goals per 50 Possessions – Expected Goals per 50 Possessions, however due to the amount of shots taken the meaning is (slightly) different.
Interpretation
Shows whether a player/team scores on his attempts better or worse than an average player/team would
Similar to GAX (Goals Above Expectation), which expresses the same in absolute Numbers. GAX is rather used for one game, as percentages then can fluctuate significantly. On the other side for multiple matches as for example a whole season or tournament percentages are rather used as they are not influenced by the number of shots taken.
