Pace
Meaning
Speed of the game, number of possessions per game
Calculation
Pace = shots + turnovers – offensive rebounds
A new possession only starts when the other team gets possession. Hence, a possession can include several shots if the attacking team gets the rebound after a missed shot.
Interpretation
Shows whether a game or all games of a team are rather fast (many possessions, high pace) or slow (few possessions, low pace). It’s influenced by the own style of play and the opponent’s.
It is not possible to draw conclusions about the quality of the team from this. There are both successful and unsuccessful teams that play fast and vice versa.
